A native San Antonian, Alejandro Sifuentes has been a metalsmith, gallery owner and businessman for over 35 years in San Antonio, Texas, where he has exhibited in a variety of solo and group exhibitions. In 2011, he moved his business downtown to La Villita and opened Equinox Gallery, giving him a chance to create and show his work alongside studio jewelers from across the country. In this role, he is able to cultivate and collaborate with a variety of makers through exhibitions and workshops, while expanding and educating the public about the field of metalsmithing.
His skills as a metalsmith are extensive, specializing in granulation, small scale casting, moldmaking, fabrication, stone setting, wax carving, and surface embellishment.
"For me, the essence of an object's transformation beyond its apparent function is the artist's journey to express the ever-present symbiosis between life and death. As a metalsmith, I explore the history of my craft and its materials. Like the icons of Egypt, stones and metals carry their own mythological value. But like the life of each person, each material takes its own unique journey. I am but a turning point in the plot of my own life."
